DIY Play Dough

I recently co hosted a sweet mama and me event, and I made this little craft that was a hit. Sensory play is so fun for kiddos, and play dough is no exception to that! This DIY was so easy, uses ingredients that you likely already have at your house, and you know exactly what is in it. Unfortunately play dough sold at the store is not super transparent with a full ingredient list, claiming “primarily a mixture of water, flour, and salt”, but it also includes unknown preservatives to prevent it from drying out on shelves and fragrance.

We all know that play dough ends up in the mouth every dang time, so lets just make it ourselves instead, especially with a DIY as easy as this.

I tested the playdough, and it is still completely playable at least 72 hours later if stored in an airtight container, but it will also airdry/harden if you leave it on the counter

making this a super fun, two in one, craft.

DIY Play Dough

What you need:

1 cup corn starch

2 cups baking soda

1.5 cups water

optional: freeze dried raspberries as natural dye

optional: essential oils to scent dough

What to do:

Add corn starch, baking soda, and water in a pot, stir to combine

Optional: smash freeze fried raspberries into a fine dust, add and combine (FYI this turns dough blue and lightens as it dries)

Cook over medium high heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring constantly until dough forms

Sprinkle additional corn starch and remove dough from pot onto prepared counter to cool

Once cooled, knead into dough

Store in airtight container for 3-4 days.

This is such a cute little craft for any season, and would be a great DIY gift. You could even continue the crafting fun and paint the ornaments as well. I was so excited that this craft was easy, inexpensive, and so much fun.

I have a feeling we will be making for many years to come.
