Front Porch Update
We have been focusing on the exterior of our home for a little bit; it is not perfect, but we sure have made a lot of progress. We started with replacing all of the doors in the house, including the exterior front and back doors. Adding a modern style door changed the entire look of the front of our home, but it also added so much more bright light into our home. Read about our door transformation here. We then added board and batten for some added dimension before painting the whole exterior, and that was quite the transformation. Read through our exterior paint choices here. Brian most recently did a surprise yard crasher style exterior front landscape makeover, and it turned out so incredibly beautiful, details coming to the blog soon.
Before & After: Exterior Paint
We have bigger plans for updating our front porch, but I decided I wanted to make it more cozy now. The wall next to the front door felt like it needed something on it, but options were limited since the entryway to the door is rather tight. I needed something that had minimal depth, but a lot of color and texture. I was inspired by the idea of a propagation wall initially, but I wanted plants or flowers with soil instead. I searched and searched, and found the perfect size and style wall mount planters, and even better, same day pick up. They are ceramic, and have the perfect creamy color against the white exterior.
We bought our rocking chairs soon after moving in knowing that I would love how the wood tone plays off of the painted white exterior. I love them so much with the chevron design of the wood and low back. We had this black console table outside at our farmhouse that we brought with us, and it fit perfectly next to our rocking chairs. I thought that a mirror leaning on or hung above the console table would be perfect for this wall. I started searching Facebook Marketplace, hoping to find an arched mirror to play off the arches on the front of our house. I expanded my search a bit, and the perfect arched mirror popped up Saturday morning. It was a bit of a hike, 40 minutes each way, but Lily and I went when Brian was working on the landscaping. I was rather surprised with the size of this mirror when I arrived (I am the worst at never measuring anything). This mirror is huge and heavy solid wood. It was exactly what I was envisioning in my head, and only $50, a true find. I knew that adding a mirror to the opposite wall of our small front porch would add so much depth and dimension to the space, but I was not prepared for how beautifully it would play off the planters I found for the opposite wall.
A few finishing touches with a new modern light fixture, a layered front porch mat, and a lidded basket that I found at home goods to house our shoes before going inside (yep, we’re a no shoes inside house with a crawling baby).
What’s next?
We have big plans to overlay the front porch and side walk with natural flagstone one day, and would love to add stained tongue and groove wood to the ceiling. but right now I am soaking in this incredible progress we have made. It takes time to achieve perfection in a home renovation, so you have to celebrate all of the progress along the way.
We love sitting out here now and having our morning coffee or relaxing in the evening before dinner.
It is the coziest little spot.
